In the period from 14 to 20 March 2016, the National Bank of Romania, in partnership with the Ministry of National Education and Child and Youth Finance International (CYFI), organised the “Global Money Week” – a series of activities dedicated to banking and financial matters for the youth. These activities were carried out as part of a broader financial education project launched by the NBR – “Let’s Talk About Money and Banks”.
The country-wide activities covered both urban and rural areas, being organised by the NBR’s regional branches and agencies, with the support of county school districts and the Bucharest School District.
Representatives of the NBR and of the Society Romania delivered presentations on topical banking and financial issues tailored to the level of knowledge of the respective age group. Moreover, groups of children were offered guided tours of the NBR’s headquarters and the Bucharest branch.
2016 marked the third year of NBR’s partnership with the CYFI, while the success of the activities conducted under this partnership was internationally acknowledged via the “Global Money Week” Award for Europe won by Romania in 2014.
Over 10,800 pupils and teachers from primary and secondary schools across the country, twice as many as in the previous years, participated in the educational activities organised during the week. The programme involved approximately 180 schools from 41 counties and Bucharest.
“Global Money Week” is a worldwide event organised by Child and Youth Finance International in the second week of March each year, aiming to raise awareness of the role of money in the everyday life of children and young people. The goal of this initiative is to deliver financial education to the youth via interactive and entertaining activities. Each year, the banking and financial communities, the private sector, the civil society and the governments in the participating countries get involved in this global financial education project offering young people the resources, the tools and the necessary inspiration to carve out a better future.
